LUANNE THOMAS EWALD

 

Luanne Thomas Ewald

 

 

Luanne Thomas Ewald is a graduate of Mercy High School and holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a specialization in Marketing from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Additionally, she holds a Masters degree in Hospital and Health Administration from Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Most of Ewald's health care career has been spent at the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) which consists of nine hospitals and more than 100 ambulatory sites. Currently she is the Vice President of Business Development and Strategic Planning at Children's Hospital of Michigan where she has primary responsibility for Network Development, Strategic Planning, and Physician Relations. She also serves as Board Secretary to the Children's Hospital of Michigan Board of Trustees.

 

Prior to her current position, Ewald served as Corporate Vice President, Business Development and Marketing for the Detroit Medical Center. She was solely responsible for business planning and market research, communication services, physician referral service and nurse triage, in addition to various marketing and physician relations initiatives. Additionally, Ewald served as the Chief Operating Officer for the Oakland Virtual Medical Center - a collection of seven outpatient facilities in Oakland County.

 

Prior to these positions, Ewald served as the Executive Administrator to the DMC President and Chief Executive Officer. In this role, she worked directly with the Board of Trustees and Executive Management on operational and strategic initiatives. Additionally, she served as the Administrative Director at the DMC's Hutzel Hospital for the Women's Health Initiative. In this role, she was responsible for overall business operations, marketing initiatives, and program development for the division. Under her leadership, patient volumes increased by 300% due to process improvement efforts and collaborations with internal departments and external community organizations.

 

Prior to her experience in Women's Health, She served as a Senior Planning and Marketing Analyst within the DMC's Corporate Offices and as an Administrative Resident at the DMC's Children's Hospital of Michigan. In these roles, she was responsible for clinical service development, ambulatory planning, business development, medical staff development, marketing, strategic, and promotional planning, and facilitating focus groups. Ewald has extensive experience in physician relations initiatives and governance development.

Ewald is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and serves on the Regents Advisory Council. She is a member and serves on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Healthcare Executives Group and Association. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the following organizations: Junior Achievement of Southeast Michigan, The Girl Scouts of Southeast Michigan, Leadership Detroit, and One Heartland (a national non-profit organization that helps improve the lives of children who experience HIV/AIDS, poverty, grief and other life challenges). She serves as Chairman of the Linda A. Transou Melanoma March and Vice Chairman of the Leadership Detroit Selection Committee.

 

She also serves as a member of the following organizations: Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development, Michigan Society for Healthcare Planning and Marketing, and Inforum. She has also served as a member of the Alumnae Board of Mercy High School, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and Festival of Trees. She is active with the Melanoma Research Foundation and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Ewald also serves as a preceptor for graduate students in Healthcare Administration at the University of Michigan, Xavier University, and University of Detroit Mercy.

 

Ewald is a graduate of Leadership Detroit. In 2007, she was named as one of Crain's Detroit Business 40 Under Forty and was a finalist for the Macomb County Athena Award.

She resides in Royal Oak, Michigan with her two daughters, Maggie (8) and Mollie (5).
